Inspiring Environmental Action Since 2015 at École St. Germain

In 2015, École St. Germain’s environmental-themed spring concert sparked a new initiative. Led by Mme Jennifer Engbrecht, a music teacher at the school, the École St Germain Enviroclub emerged with a mission to ensure that environmental consciousness wasn't just a passing theme but an enduring commitment among students.

Since its inception, the Enviroclub has embarked on a journey of impactful initiatives aimed at fostering positive change for the environment and combating climate change. From raising awareness through events like Earth Hour and Environment Week to organizing their own Climate Change symposium in collaboration with Climate Change Connection, the club has been at the forefront of environmental advocacy within the school community.

Taking tangible actions to mitigate its ecological footprint, the club has actively participated in climate strikes, initiated projects like the pollinator garden, and partnered with organizations such as Bag Up Manitoba to reduce waste. Recognizing the importance of education, they introduced initiatives like litterless lunch days and climate assemblies, integrating environmental learning across various subjects.

Thanks to generous contributions from Learning for a Sustainable Future, the club launched a composting program in all classrooms with Compost Winnipeg, furthering their commitment to sustainability. They've also fostered a connection to nature by collaborating with Henteleff Park and engaging in activities through the Manitoba Métis Federation Citizen Science program.

Driven by their passion for environmental stewardship, students have created inspiring projects, ranging from books to puppet shows, to motivate their peers to act. They've welcomed speakers from organizations like Oceans North and Manitoba Monarch Teachers Network to fuel their enthusiasm for change.

Looking ahead, the Enviroclub is eager to collaborate with organizations like Winnipeg Trails and Bike Winnipeg to plant trees and promote active transportation through a school Bike Bus program. They are also excited to collaborate with Emily Thoroski, 'The Environmental Musician,' who shares Mme Engbrecht's belief in the power of the arts to communicate environmental messages effectively.

Grateful for the support from school administration, board office, and trustees who prioritize the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Enviroclub envisions a future where environmental action thrives within Manitoba, across the ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥, and beyond. Their youthful passion knows no bounds, inspiring hope for a greener, more sustainable future.

Recently, the École St. Germain Enviroclub received recognition from Mike Moyes, MLA, marking a significant milestone in their journey of environmental advocacy. The MLA commended the club's dedication and innovative approach towards promoting sustainability within the school and beyond. This acknowledgment not only validates the efforts of the students and faculty involved but also highlights the importance of grassroots initiatives in driving environmental action. It serves as a testament to the impact that small-scale initiatives can have in inspiring larger societal change, encouraging the Enviroclub to continue its mission with renewed zeal and determination.

MLA Mike Moyes' Member Statement

“It was fun to meet Mike Moyes and be in the building,” said Aria, a student in the Enviroclub. “I also like that what we [Enviroclub] do is good for everybody.”

On April 22, the Envrioclub was invited back to the Legislative Building for a special Earth Day celebration.

“It was fun," said Sara. "I saw sea creatures I never knew existed and so many other cool things that I saw.”

Mme Engbrecht and the students loved learning from the many organizations who had booths set up.

"It would be very difficult to bring all these organizations together for our little club," said Mme Engbrecht. "Having the chance to see them all together and learn more was amazing and I’m sure provided hope to students to see so many organizations working to help the planet."

A big thank you to MLA Moyes for providing the Enviroclub with the opportunity to attend this fun and informative Earth Day event!
