Minnetonka garden gets boost from foundation

Gardening season might be winding down in Winnipeg, but all the work Minnetonka School put into their courtyard garden has caught the attention of Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation, a registered national charitable organization that helps create and sustain school gardens.

Recently, the organization in partnership with Farm to Cafeteria Canada presented the school with a cheque for $2,000 to go toward growing their already beautiful garden. The garden boasts a little pond with reeds that grow up all summer and are trimmed down in fall and with a spout that shoots water in an arch to circulate it. There are trees and bushes and little boxed gardens with vegetables and picnic tables where students can sit and enjoy the space. Located in a courtyard surrounded on all sides by the school, it’s Minnetonka’s own secret garden.

The garden has already served the students as a learning space. In one activity, students heard about the importance of sage as an Indigenous medicine, for example. Together they discussed its cultural significance and its healing properties. Afterward, to deepen their understanding and appreciation for its role in traditional practices, they planted sage themselves.

Thank you so much to Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation and Farm to Cafeteria Canada for supporting our students!
