Sparky and crew teach fire safety

You might’ve thought Sparky the Fire Dog, the firefighting dalmatian mascot of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS), was the latest pop icon, if you were at the WFPS fire prevention presentation at Hastings School Monday, Oct. 7.

The mascot ran into the gymnasium to the joyful screams of the students and high-fived practically everyone in the front row.

“The fire department did a great job of boosting the energy level in the gymnasium, along with bringing our attention to fire safety,” Hastings principal Lisa Lewis said.

The crew of firefighters were kicking off the national Fire Prevention Week. They helped reinforce the importance of fire safety, such as regularly checking that fire detectors are functioning properly and having a safety plan in place for emergencies.

The kids even got the chance to check out the pumper trucks, which we can surely all agree are pretty cool.

Lisa said the fun even inspired one usually non-verbal student to exclaim: “Hey, I’ll be safe!”

Thank you to the WFPS for helping teach students important lessons and for making it fun — and a special thanks to Sparky, who’s never too famous for high-fiving fans.
