ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ and EARTH DAY 2025: Our Power, Our Planet!

April 22 marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual celebration that encourages positive actions for our environment. Staff and students in the ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ (ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥) usually celebrate Earth Day by participating in a variety of activities together that highlight the importance of being kind to the earth and being environmentally responsible. The theme for Earth Day 2025 is and encourages people to embrace a renewable future and take action to protect the planet.

Here are just a few of the many dynamic stories of practice connecting ÌðÐÄÖ±²¥ schools to Earth Day this year.

École Sage Creek School is working towards revamping their composting program. They've partnered with the to create a plan that works for their school. Some classes currently do vermicomposting and more classes are signing on to having a bin in their classroom to collect daily food waste that is emptied in one of their larger bins outdoors. With the use of interactive games and lessons, the hope is to inspire all classes to try composting!

At École St Germain, students are practicing for their school concert which speaks of the 10 year anniversary of the ESG EnviroClub. This year, the EnviroClub and school choir have the honour of being invited by Environment Minister Mike Moyes to perform for an Earth Day Celebration on April 22nd, with with whom they wrote songs about nature and the environment last spring.  The EnviroClub has been working with to make some hydroponic lettuce kits to grow in class, to learn about food security.

This spring In spring, École St Germain will be getting a garden box being built by LRATC teacher Richard Pharand and students in his woods class to create a learning garden for the school, and participate in Harvest Manitoba's , to grow vegetables to respond to Also coming up is starting up their Bike Bus after the successful event last year.  This is a wonderful initiative where students and families ride together on a route that works for everyone to and from the school!  St. Germain and Collège Jeanne-Sauvé are also collaborating on some ideas they can do together, as partner

Students from the Club Vert-ennes decided to relaunch the composting program at École Varennes this April. They presented to the school over the Teams morning announcements about the benefits of composting and after lunch every day, Club Vert-ennes members collect, empty, rinse and replace the stainless steel bins. A $200 grant from the Learning for a Sustainable Future allowed for the purchase of an outdoor composter.

“Compost is fun because we’re taking garbage out of the landfill and it’s good for the garden and everyone,” says Isla.

Hazel adds, “Anyone can do it. Even at your house, your neighbour’s house or your community.”

The students from École Provencher’s Club Environnement had lots of questions about houseplants and were interested in learning more about plant propagation. With the help of Mme Suzanne the Teacher-Librarian at the school, they learned how to make new plants from existing classroom plants using three different techniques. They planted seeds into the Little Green Thumbs garden located in the Carrefour d’Apprentissage, they divided plant roots to create new plants and they rooted plant cuttings. They plan to surprise students and staff by generously gifting these baby plants to classrooms and the community.
